Critical Theory & Issues in Educational Technology

According to the Britannica (n.d) definition, critical theory is characterized as a reflective approach to philosophy and culture to identify, understand, and address the constructs of which oppress and dominate individuals and groups within a societal landscape. Critical theory, especially based on the readings and information I analyzed, exists as a constant challenge to the scientific process. This postmodern view of critical theory eschews societal dependence on rationality, reasoning, and absolutes. Instead, the “critical” component stands to challenge structures built on the basis of collective societal and cultural norms. While critical theory gives the impression of fixation on only negative or oppressive components, it acts more as a necessary reflection and counter to the status quo, calling for more thoughtful analysis of constructs within literature, culture, organization, history, education, etc.

In my assessment, critical theory plays a necessary role in how many aspects of society function, especially with regards to education and the growth of technology within that space. Technology alone is a constantly expanding structure, itself filled with as many promises as it is unknowns. Critical analysis of that structure allows for refined, objective, or opposing views to propose improvement or necessary change.

Additionally, I reviewed the article “10 Issues in Educational Technology” from Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). I focused on three sections of the article, including Data Systems and Data Privacy. This collection of information highlights the importance of data definitions in terms of identification, structure, and streamlined data for wider organizational reference. This ensures a wider collaborative effort and better statistical analysis when referencing data from various schools, organizations, and entities. Data privacy encourages the responsible collection, monitoring, and disbursement of student data, especially as those efforts apply to lawful protection under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Data systems and data privacy are key components of the educational spectrum that require careful research and monitoring when planning for effective and responsible learning experiences. I view them as foundational pieces that help expand and inform the decisions and practices of organizations, especially if proper training and development is made available to facilitate proper usage of those systems and data.
